SUMMARY:Excellence in Ag Sciences Day
DESCRIPTION:Contamination of domestic wells from agrichemicals\, natural contaminants\, and pathogens is a significant concern to rural residents and regulatory agencies. Groundwater is the primary source of drinking water for most rural residents and farmstead residents. Nearly all of Nebraska’s rural population depends on roughly 30\,000 domestic wells for drinking water. Most states\, including Nebraska\, do not have a comprehensive list of private wells\, and few wells are regularly tested. The occurrence of agrichemicals\, geogenic contaminants\, and pathogens in domestic wells often goes undetected resulting in a health risk for a significant segment of the rural population. \nAttend Excellence in Ag Sciences Day to receive information\, lessons\, & resources to equip both teachers and students to help address these challenges. \nThe Annual Excellence in Ag Sciences Day will be held May 30\, 2024 at Raising NE in Grand Island. Register by May 20\, 2024 at https://go.unl.edu/agscienceday.  Please send $25 check payable to UNL to NE Extension – Fillmore Co.\, 1340 G St.\, Geneva\, NE 68361 which covers the meal and supplies.

SUMMARY:Aquaponics 101 Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This 5-day professional development workshop is designed for teachers that would like to integrate aquaponics into their curriculum. The workshop is geared to middle and high school teachers\, but adventurous elementary and pre-service teachers are welcome. Aquaponics is a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics\, the growing of plants without soil. The fish and plants form a symbiotic relationship where the fish provide nutrients for the plants and the plants help clean the water for the fish. Classrooms across the country incorporate aquaponics to engage students and teachers in real world applications of chemistry\, biology\, math and agriculture science. \nThe workshop provides professional development credit (32 hrs) and hands-on opportunities to build small aquaponics systems and interact with aquaponics experts.  Topics covered at the workshop include integrating plant and fish culture\, the nitrogen cycle\, water quality\, components of a recirculating aquaculture system\, plant and fish selection\, plant and fish disease and pest management and many others. Attendees will have the opportunity to design and build an entire aquaponics system that they will be able to take back to their schools. For additional information please see the attached documents or contact David Cline at clinedj@auburn.edu  334-844-2874. You can register for the workshop online via the Alabama Cooperative Extension System web site at https://www.aces.edu/go/Aquaponics101 \nSee what previous attendees have to say: https://youtu.be/qEe5jIhrYgA \nCost of $295 (does not include\, transportation\, room\, meals) \nCancellation policy: Cancellations made more than 14 days in advance receive a full refund minus $25 processing fee. SUMMARY:Engler Guide Conference
DESCRIPTION:An educator’s conference focused on teaching with a “Guiding” mindset. What happens when the Engler mission is applied to teachers? Is teaching much like entrepreneurship? Can the core concepts used in launching and running a business also apply to managing a classroom of students? \nTeaching is a purpose-driven profession. If you ask a teacher\, “Why do you teach?” be prepared to hear a heartfelt story that clearly conveys a passion for students. \nTeachers have the ability to change the trajectory of a student’s life simply by creating the right atmosphere for nurturing purpose. This is why Engler created a program for educators – Guide. \nAt Guide\, there is a track for first time Guides and a track for returning Guides. All educators are welcome\, so bring a friend! The cost to attend is $75 and this covers registration and meals. Hotel accommodations and travel expenses are not covered. You are able to use Perkins funding to help cover costs. To learn more about the conference and to register\, follow this link.
